    Radiator Grille Name Plate

Post  paulboncz on Sat Feb 07, 2015 8:19 pm

To owners of a 1979 Chevrolet Caprice. I have the "CHEVROLET" name plate that attaches on the left side of the radiator grille. It has two odd shaped studs in the back. Can anyone tell me where to find the attaching nuts/retainers for this name plate? I don't have them. Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum!!  I've always referred to those as "stupid" nuts.  I used to see them in auto parts stores in the help section, but I haven't looked in a while.  I think they are actually called thread cutting nuts and I've also seen them referred to as capsule nuts or speed nuts.  I can't remember what size the grill emblem takes, but you can get an assortment of them dirt cheap.  Here is one auction I found after a quick search, although the shipping on this one is ridiculous, but you can shop around for a better deal.

Two types of fasteners were used. The thread cutting nuts that Solo mentioned which can be purchased at most chain auto parts stores like O'riley or auto zone.
The second is a speed nut. I don't know why it's called a nut because it's a push-on type fastener. Here's an example:

Here's one on one of my spare grills:

    I hope this helps.
