Fuel Tanks

I thought I'd share a few tidbits I found out about tanks rather than impress you with my two tone Paint job.

I bought this tank off of Sweet79 thinking it's a 22gal like my original. Actually it's 24gal from a sedan 82 and up ?

Before that most 24gal were Wagons at least this what I read. What I found out is there are 3 tanks 1 22gal and 2 24gal

one for 2/4dr and the other wagon. The sender/pickups also have the 2 and 3 line version but there are versions for

22gal and 24gal. I guess AC was the factor for the return line rather than just vapor line on some but not all as mine

had AC and no return line. If anybody has something to add or correct please just thought I'd toss it out so you might

not make my initial assumption that there wasn't that much variation on these.

(also I'm not done painting the tank lol)

Is this a new or just a good condition tank>

This came out of a car Sweet79 had apparently they had just put it in (Denting it on the install no leaks though)

I pulled out of the car it looked like new except the dent. There are again two 24 gal one for sedans and one for Wagons

the difference is the Wagon is taller rather than slightly wider. Part number is gm4 or gm411a (spectra Pemium) one without

neck . There are two different pickup senders two that match this tank one for 2 lines (Spectra FG10b the one I bought)

and  another with 3 lines(Spectra FG10G). The 22gal sender\pickup and wagon 24gal are completely different from these.

Fortunately the 2 line is cheap I found mine on ebay for $30 the 3 line is twice the price though. Also the straps for the

24 gal are st09 vs st010 for the older 22gal. Also every sender/pickup are all standard GM 0-90ohms no worries there.

Here is the tank without the over spray I am going to add a hard gloss and call it a day.I only two-toned as I wanted to use what I had lol.

Looks pretty sharp. I went with the plastic tank from a '94 roadmaster so I could run an in tank pump. The only concern I have with it is whether the filler neck comes up high enough to sit properly behind the license plate.

That is really sharp looking tho

I have found a 24 gallon on Ebay.

Its a GM411B for an 85 Impala/Caprice. And other vehicles 85 to 89.

If this is the 24 gallon, I'll get it. There is a GM part number 10089617.

Its $132 dollars shipped. And a 2 line sender and straps are on order when I want also.

The sender is a Spectra FG10B. For $31.76 + 8.95 shipping.

The straps are for the 24 gallon tank.

We will see soon.

I found the F10A on Ebay for $113.00 shipped w/neck.

I finished installing the 24gal tank in my 79' Impala Coupe and it fits like a glove. The sending unit from the early 80s with

hookup for 2 lines rather than 3 also works perfectly with my aftermarket Fuel Gauge I have driven for few days checking

for issues and leaks. I used the stainless and rubber 3/8 fuel line and some AN fitting for the pump and carb my only leak

was where I could not use the AN fitting due to using original style fuel pump. This pump has a nipple for the line and

needs   180 degree for the tank line in hindsight I should have just used a different pump but this style made by Carter

has been good to me. I got desperate and used fitting for fuel pressure gauge with 2 3/8 barbs and it works great better

than bending lines anyway.(The Barbs and blue fitting if wondering are large on the inside,larger than 3/8 hose anyway.)

.People like to bend hose for this but to me it seems hose collapses eventually. Anyhow just wanted to follow for anyone

interested in the larger 24 gallon tank.

Did you do anything special on the pickup in the tank? Extended or left stock?

The flimsy screen is just about useless to stay on. Maybe not use it at all?

I'm just trying to catch up with any information on the fuel tank install w/screen.

It seems like a flakey item on the pickup tube. Any suggestions on before install?

That's a great idea on the 180* turn the fuel line has to go from the pump to the tank. What I did on mine was run a big loop that goes up near the radiator so the bend wouldn't be sharp and this is also where I ran my fuel filter.

Terry dropping the tank or installing is pretty straightforward. I dropped mine a few years ago when I thought the gas had gone bad from sitting so long. It turns out I had a bad cam(with 8 flat lobes due to not having ZDDP in the oil) but I was really surprised to see the inside of my tank was perfect. Not a spec of dirt or rust.

I haven't installed the 24 gallon tank yet. But wondered if it was really needed with the sock filter? It seems pretty lame.

I would definitely install it.

In college I had a little Mazda pickup with a Perkins diesel that kept randomly stranding us. It would be fine for a 500 mile trip, and then die when going around the block.

A friend wanted it, so out of frustration I sold it to him. He told me later that he cleaned out the tank and found a little half inch scrap of rubber that looked like it had come out of the inside of a hose, which kept getting sucked into the fuel inlet at random intervals and starving the engine.

I would still have that truck today if it had had a fuel sock.

MYLOTH:  Did you read what I asked about the tank pickup?

I haven't installed the 24 gallon yet (winter).

The pickup fuel sock is not my keenest thing.

If I install an external electric fuel pump, what then for fuel delivery?

Any suggestions on the pickup tube?

Hi Myloth, here is another option on a tank for the performance minded.
Cut the tank and welded in the fuel sump. I really need to add the return line, would be a lot easier on the fuel pump.
