    Backing plates Empty Backing plates

Post  terry cronk Sun Mar 20, 2016 11:05 am

I can't find any new backing plates for my 92 Buick Roadmaster rearend.

The part number is discontinued. GM #18002392 (universal w/o cable holes).

Any help here on this would be appreciated.

I have sent out 3 or 4 requests to suppliers. We will see.

The ones are from 1977-96 on B-Bodies w/drum rears.

Might try used, yard or online and clean them yourself if yours aren't serviceable. I seen 3 rears including one 95'

I purchased for my 79' that the plates were serviceable. Unless someone has a cache of NOS it would

unlikely to find them. One of those parts that finding new is difficult if not impossible. Anyway mine cleaned up

decent with a powered wire brush .

Thanks for the link to the Chevy dealer with the backing plates.

Now I will have some new clean and strong plates for new brakes.

    Thanks again.

That link to Clark Chevrolet was good, but the parts were not available.

I will try the other first link.

    Thanks

I ordered them, then the email arrives.

    Not in stock, discontinued.

    No luck either place.

Maybe just clean up the ones I have and see if they are good enough.

    Thanks guys.

I had the same problem on my 79 impala. I ended up welding the wore spots from the shoes and grinding it back down to the original level

Yeah, it looks an awful lot like you're going to have to go dumpster diving to find that one.  I'll keep my eyes open, there's a pull a part in my area that just took in a Caprice wagon, tho it was kinda rough.  I think some of the old chevy trucks with 11" rear brakes used the same parts, but I don't know if the backing plates cross over. The drums, shoes, and everything else seem to.

Well, no new Backing plates for this build.  They looked better when cleaned up.

I just took the plates, rearend w/cover and pinion yoke to get them burned out(oil etc.) , blasted then powder coated gloss black.

They do some nice pieces at Gladwin Metal.  They have even done some complete frames.

Once their back, its starting assembling everything.

Looks like I got the 3.73 gears for the build.    That ought to make it scoot.  A warmed up 350.

Maybe later the 4 bolt I have will be a 383!

Right now its a turbo 350.  Maybe later a 700R4.
