Plans for our 78 2door

We have a 78 I picked up back in 98 for $150. I drove it home about 40 miles and the 305 ran good and the trans felt nice and tight. The steering was a different story, loose was an understatement. Half a turn on the wheel to get the tires to start to move! The plan for it is a 496 big block for street and strip use. I have not been able to do much with it for the last 10 or so years. It has been stashed in the garage behind lots of stuff. I have the engine ready to go to the machine shop and the front of the car is on the roof so I can clean and paint the frame. I am now thinking a frame off might be the way to go. I just do not know how to support the body when I remove it.

Anyway I am glad I found this forum as these cars are not very popular. The more people come together the better it will become.

Welcome to the Forum. If you got it for $150.00, you did really good even for '98. You couldn't get one at that price today even for a shell. The scrap yards pay more than that and so do the race car guys. Would love to see some pics of it sometime. You are right, a frame off is the way to go because at least you know you've covered everything in the car. I'm hoping to have my frame off the car by winter and when I do, I will post lots of pictures of how I support the body and I'm working on a grass driveway outside. You basically are disassembling the entire car piece by piece and then restoring/refinishing, replacing each piece before it goes back together. Take lots of photos, document and label everything as you go. Start securing parts that you know you'll need now before you even get it all the way tore down. You never know if they'll be available when you actually need them.

You are right in that these cars were never really a popular choice to fix up/restore. I think it's slowly changing though. They've got good looks and are solid cars to build and a big block will go right in there with little effort and room to spare. I too am contemplating that myself.

This is how it should work if you use the Attach file option just under the Post window:

Personally, I prefer to use an offsite image hosting service such as photobucket. It's easier and you can keep all your photos in one place and it's free! I did check your username and I don't see anything that would prevent you from using the Attach file method.

Thats because if you want to host a pic on the forum without using an outside source like photobucket, you have to click on "host an image" in the toolbar, once you select your image and upload it, it gives you 3 links to copy, only choose the bottom one, then you click on "insert an image" which is right next to host image, and paste it in there, and then youll be good to go. Its confusing at first and sometimes annoying, but once you figure it out its nothing. But please keep us updated on your project!
