    Project Impulse Empty Project Impulse

Post  IMPALA MAN Thu Oct 01, 2015 10:11 pm

I just joined the site and was so glad to see that there are other people as crazy as me.  I will begin with the story:
Circa 1985, I was 15 years old and looking for a hot rod.  I spotted a 78 Landau with Keystone Classics on it and some air shocks.  At that point I knew what I wanted and knew where I could get one.  My second cousin had one that was in perfect shape.  His parents bought it brand new and I remember the day they brought it over to the house to show the family.  The rest is history as you will see in the following pictures.  It started when I was in high school and is still going strong today.  OKI am working on images but still resolving how to get them posted, will post soon

Project Impulse Empty Pictures.. Finally I had to wait 7 days because I was a newbe

Post  IMPALA MAN Sun Oct 11, 2015 9:24 pm

Great to be back.  I guess my "probation" period is over and now I can post pictures.  I wish I would have know before loading 28 pictures the last time that I couldn't post pictures until I am a member for at least 7 days.  Guess I missed it in the user agreement or something. Either way, glad to be here and I am only going to post one picture first to test it, then the rest.

It was my high school car.  The first car I ever owned that I paid cash for with my own money (not Mom and Dad's):

Project Impulse Empty Looks like it worked

Post  IMPALA MAN Sun Oct 11, 2015 9:37 pm

Soon after I graduated from college, I decided to get a little wilder with it.  This was on the tail of the Pro Street movement.  It looked great for the times, however by the late 90's started to get outdated:

Then around 2005 it was time to take it to the next level:

Word to the wise. DO NOT do your final body sanding on a cart like this!!. Although it worked great to roll the car around and work on it. The body WILL flex once the wait is on the wheels and not the frame. Just a helpful hint. How do I know, I know!!!

She's coming along nicely! I'm loving the quarter mod.
I've always been a fan of front fender vents too.

I love this car from the moment I saw it on the ProTouring site and is the inspiration for my on build!!!  Pure awesome.

Thanks for sharing the history and pictures on this.  I'm sure I will have many questions for you as my build progresses.  What diameter are your wheels?

Wow, kind of speechless here, but that looks amazing, i was wondering about those wheels and i knew some tub action had to be done to that frame and body. Love the wheel combo, looks great, pretty much exactly what i want to do, just a tad bit narrower wheel in the back maybe a 12inch at the most for me. What kind of power plant is going to be moving those wheels?? Do you know about how much was it lowered? And lastly, welcome to the forum!

Boyd Coddington, junk yard dogs are the actual wheels name. I've been eyeing the foose nitrous concave wheels for Irene. I kept thinking I've seen them before on a car like her and as soon as this car was posted here I knew where it was I've seen the look. Twisted Evil

I think I lowered the front about two inches. It's tough how I had to get the look. Here is how. First I knew to get a good rake, because the car was so long I would have to get the front as low as I practically could.
Here was the parts and how they played out.
First you want to try to get the top of the rear rims to be within 1-2 inches from the wheel well. This gives the car a low look no matter how high or low it really is. Then lower the front end to get the rake you want. It took 20" rims to get there. It could have used 22s however I noticed the only company making tires for the rims was Mickey Thompson. They were offering 22" tires, however they were on the garage sale, which most of the time means they are soon to be discontinued. That be suspected, I really didn't want to end up with two 22 X 15 $1500 hose reels.
On the power plant, it's a 350 Tune Port out of an 86 Camaro. It's a little built, however once I get it going and maybe a power tour on it, I'll probably get a crate long block or maybe an LS Engine. I'm not big on having the biggest baddest engine. I just want to cruise and have fun.

I have had similar issues with rubber but on the opposite end it's becoming very hard to get cheap 15s. So I am thinking

of going to larger rims but probably not 22s lol more likely 17s or 18s as they are becoming the most common tires.

TPI sounds like a great plan for a cruiser I agree I am not a power freak I don't want to be embarrassed by a Tiburon but

beyond that mpg and easy starting appeal to me.

Project Impulse Empty Wheels and Tires

Post  IMPALA MAN Mon Aug 22, 2016 9:52 pm

The rear are 20 X 15 wide rims and the front are 18 X 9 wide. Boyd Wheels and Mickey Thompson Tires.
It takes a lot to fill up the wheel wells!!
    Thanks for the compliments!!
