79 you have seen before

Thought I'd say hi been occupied my mother passed after a long illness. I think I finally stopped the smoking not sure

what but I ran some Restore through it (again)then changed the oil and it went away maybe one of the walls has a

scratch or a crappy ring it will get me going till I replace it.

All that smoking blew oil into the carb so I had to pull that to clean it which means time for a rebuild as oil was

everywhere.





EWWWWW lots of gray gunk in there.











Anyhow how is everyone making out, I haven't seen any updates lately?

Sorry to hear about your mother passing, I wish you and your family the best. I think everyone must be out enjoying their car now that the weather has been more accommodating. Currently I am doing the research and fund collecting to get my NOS Delco am/fm, 8 track, cb radio working properly. After sitting on a shelf for the last 35 years I can only get 2 of the 4 speakers working, so it looks beautiful but has some issues that need to be addressed to work as intended. Keep us updated and let us know how the search for the 350 turns out.

How does everyone feel about a 68' 283 (250hp) for a swap  there is a local that has one

that is fairly fresh and low cost. I am figuring that even a 283 with 68 heads makes more hp than a 79 305

and the mpg might be worth it for a cruiser. I doled up my 305 (pic below) still goes but it's a smoker



But you know what they say about you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear lol. So I am inclined to swap

the motor when I swap the transmission at the same time. It's  thought anyway maybe Sweet is right

I should pursue a BBC instead.

Anyone epoxy any body parts at all I have to cut quarters and was debating on whether to rivet or epoxy

any thoughts?

Almost forgot the bees lol I had weird experience the other day I had about a dozen honey bees in my fender.

Buzzing in and out for hours next day they were all gone!

In 68 GM increased the journal sizes. Do you know if it has small or large journals? Hopefully large.
You could drop the crank in a 327 or 350 block and make a 302!! That would be AWESOME!! You'd probably be the only one on the planet with a 302 in their B body!! Of course with a 302 you'd have to convert over to a stick, hehehe!

I still think you should hook some Nitrous back up on the 305 and take it out in a blaze of glory! ..... with pics.

I am at that point of total annihilation for this smoky 305 I just left a huge cloud of smoke at the bike shop and the

deli upon start up it's gotten real old Runs good though otherwise sounds mean even it only has the power of a weezy

3800. I am installing this 2004r shortly so I am going to find something to bolt to it and do engine /tranny swap saves

a lot of grief . Now in the meanwhile maybe I'll go film a few 6000rpm drops for laughs. Maybe I should post a write up

of the shift kit\mods I'm in the middle of on the forum. The 2004r is an easy tranny to work on I think and nice and

light to boot without the converter it's no problem to move around.

All that smoke keeps the exhaust lubricated, lol

6K rpm neutral drops... awesome. I bet the 1st thing to go is a rod bolt, blowing a nice hole in the side of the block.
Have you ever smelled a blown engine? Eeeeeew! It's raunchy!
Maybe you could pull it and make it into a patio Margarita Mixer? Or a Go Cart!! Yeah!! put it on a go cart! Shifter carts are hitting above 80mph so I bet it would do 150mph! I volunteer anybody but me as a test driver.

Lol exhaust lube! I had two go bad one was K car 2.2l that threw a rod\piston went right through the front of the block and

a not so violent rod go in a 3800 supercharged.



Hey I didn't know they made these they are intended for G bodies but look like a shoe in for the B bodies as well.

(Maybe few welds to strengthen.)

I'm not familiar with it but hey, it never hurts to strengthen that mounting area. What are you using for a cross member?

The original one for now but that will change when I do the dual exhaust.

Here's a few pics of that 89 I seen before it's a one owner Landau old guy drives it

who lives near me. I was able to snap a few at Stewarts.

That's either an 86 or 87 landau. Those are the only year with those tail lights and sport mirrors. No 2 doors were factory made after 1987.

If that's an 87 and possibly with a stock 350, it'd be super rare... I'd almost trade for an 87 with a 350... ALMOST.

I'll have to check the year next time I swore he said 88 or 89 but maybe I am wrong. I do believe it is a 305 though but

I will confirm.

It's been a while but as I posted before some personal issues have kept me from doing much. (Mom died, Kids etc)

Anyway a new neighbor who is a very experienced mechanic helped me sort out this 305 .

Turns out it had several bugaboos. one was the distributor (which has been replaced with rebuilt) second

was the vacuum manifold tee was damaged (badly ripped threads and bent!) and third the tranny modulator was bad.

Also we checked everything from compression (surprisingly good) to vacuum and set the timing at 9 deg (good idle now)

All this has been fixed and it runs pretty damn good, it's tire chirping good reminds me of a friends 88' Monte SS

To prove it to myself if (because I think I need it.) I am going to post a video this weekend  of me driving it just

to see how it sounds , expect a link this weekend. Anyway hope everyone is good and your B bodies too!

Update Carb pop is gone turns out I had one idle

I couldn't resist not sharing this pic I was bored today this is the result.

It's been a while since I posted an update so here it is. I just finished installing an electric fan setup it came out

good I took my time and set it up right the first time (haha). The sheetmetal well I am no master of riveting in

fact it was my third  time doing it and the last was some years ago but it's highly functional if not pretty.

Now the car warms up a lot faster and stays at a steady 180 once it is.







I also should give thanks to the Heat Miser for making this possible by giving us such a warm December this year!

That's a cool mod. Great job! I was thinking about doing an electric fan setup on mine when the time comes.

Thanks I am still getting used to the quiet at idle and not having to worry about my fingers under the hood. The kits

they sell are pretty painless to use (ok pun intended). I would watch out for the cheap breaker they give I intend

to replace it soon. I had to JB weld it because it cracked off it's base before being installed! And these are very

common items I think what is bad tack welds these below.



I think I will use something like this it's waterproof and has manual break if needed.

I did not even think they made the crate motors in 1980. It's a Target Master crate that was offered through

certain retailers. Just some info if you ever see a used GM crate motor it might be older than you think.

It is odd I use to read PHR, Car Craft and Hot Rod,R&T,etc.etc religiously as a teen(1980s) and the first ad for

GM replacement crate that I remember was the very early 90s. It's not a bad thing though if you are looking

for a good block the old Mexican Crates are 4bolt mains , high in Nickel and considered fairly stout. And these

beat out many later year(back to the 80s..) blocks for the aforementioned qualities for a rebuild.


PS Another piece of info I found out is there are people looking for the older 4bbl low compression heads

for their 80s and early 90s TBI motors as they say those TBI heads are worse than anything. I sold

the heads from my motor for a bill to a guy who needed therm for 93 Tahoe interesting...

Target motors.... gms first run at a crate program. Back in dads asphalt modifed days they went through those things like they were free... called them hand grenades. They were cheaply built and assembled using any pieces gm had. Dad and my uncle would kick everyone round the track everywhere they went and the egines had a claim rule. When they got claimed and the claimer got the engine no flywheel clutch or intake and carb  they would get mad when they tore down the engine and found it had 5 6 or even 8 differnent pistons, differnent cast type connecting rods, 0.010 or 0.020 turned crank and they got spanked by it! Glad to see there still out there.  
Op whos radiator did you use? Afco? Howe? Speedway? And what dia. And mfg electric fan did you use

Yeah Target the block actually was good I checked it's specs in excellent shape. But two of the piston rings went sour

on that motor so yeah prob crap parts. The fan is a Summit 16" Electric that came with a radiator and still haven't used

it yet but the Rad that's in there is I believe a Rock Auto plastic/ aluminum 28x17 it works fine though especially

with the HD HD Water Pump (Aluminum Impeller and Body). The install to was a snap hardest part was making that shroud

from scratch.

Yeah the blocks were usually good. but machining/ assembly processes weren't the best.
ok im gonna do a electric to help clear charge piping on my setup. and whos water pump? sounds like a moroso brand?
and the shrounds are pretty easy to fab up with the right tools. idk if you had access to some 3/16 aluminum sheet metal some shears and a rivet gun. youd be set in a heat beat. or get on speedway/summit/or jegs and order one of thesehttp://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-380328-sh/overview/

No it's actually Airtex through Rock Auto  this as I said is Heavy Duty Heavy Duty All Aluminum and for the price! I'd say it's the best Water Pump I've used for this kind of money.

Today I finally got my Power Steering belt nice and tight . (bracket issues)

Soon as I fired it up the alternator whined like crazy. Bearings were shot so anyway

I install my backup alternator till new bearings (already on the way) get here.

So what happens the replacement whines even louder lol!

I guess I should have double checked that one...

Well the Impala has been running almost every day since the summer I guess it

needs a break for few days.

There maybe hope I forgot about a cs144 I painted that I tried before I don't think I realized there was

no current on the idiot light(deleted) side to excite it so even it spun there was no current .

Tomorrow I'll run a new wire to it and hopefully have some juice.
